`“Lonely Castle in the Mirror” is directed by Keiichi Hara, and is partnered with the animation studio A-1 Pictures for the film’s animation. The film, like its light novel written by Tsujimura Mizuki, was published in 2022. The film’s story inspired by the light novel is felt more than it is seen, it touches on the subjects of self-esteem, emotional neglect and supportive friendships, and gives a gentle nudge of reality with the fantasy of it all, making it a perfect blend of both. A movie with these qualities is hard to come by and truly a delight. The blending of fantasy with realism is seamless and serves this story well, as the visuals are astounding.
A circulatory junior high school student goes by the name of Kokoro Anzai. With the deep gash of anxiety and personal issues in the way, Kokoro has a hard time attending school. Kokoro has a tough time going to school as a result of the issues she has personally and the anxiety she constantly feels. Kokoro feels empty and disengaged.
One afternoon, Kokoro notices a rather odd sight. A dull mirror, she notices, gives off light and seems is a dull, she notices gives out light. The mirror is more than just an ornament to the room, it is a portal that takes Kokoro to a fantasy like castle. She meets six other kids, children like Kokoro, full of emotional conflict. They are all around the same age. She is emotionally neglected. Like Kokoro, all the other children bear school as well.
`
The group is welcomed by a strange girl in a wolf mask, who refers to herself as the Wolf Queen. She informs them there is a key somewhere inside the castle that, to whoever finds it, will be allowed to make one wish. It can be anything they desire. But there are strict rules: the castle is open only during the day, and anyone remaining inside after closing time will be punished.
At first the children are quiet and don’t seem to trust one another. However, as time progresses, they begin to bond and make friends. Through shared meals, storytelling, and small gestures, they realize that they are not alone in their struggles. Each one has felt a sense of alienation, fear, or not being understood in some way. The castle becomes a sanctuary for them where they can truly be themselves.
Kokoro, especially, starts to become more and more different. She becomes more open and self assured, as her friends help her come out of her reserved self. She also starts to understand that it is okay not to be okay, and that there is strength in asking for help.
Eventually, more profound enigmas surrounding the castle surface. Without a doubt, the children’s bond is more than a coincidence. The culmination of Kokoro’s story, and that of her friends, is filled with meaning. They are faced with a dilemma—individuals’ desires versus the collective welfare of the group. Ultimately, the bond of friendship overshadows the need of self solitude.
Each child, as the enchanting phase of their life comes to an end, is now ready to tackle the world with a braver heart and a supportive camaraderie. Kokoro, who was pathologically fearful, braves her way to school with the support and positivity she received from the castle.
