Miraculously, he is united with his parents Zuba, who is very proud to be the head of the pride, and Florrie his ever loving, soft hearted mother. Zuba is very hopeful that Alex will learn the ways of the lion pride, especially the rite of passage all lion cubs are put through: a test of strength. The test is used to determine if one is able to be accepted as a full member to the pride. Unfortunately, Alex’s dancing and showmanship does not meet the wild’s standards, especially with his New York style.

Themes and Messages

  1. Be Yourself

What makes this film stand out is the lesson of divergent thinking; Alex realizes that being a lion doesn’t necessarily mean having to fight. He can also be strong in his own way by dancing, and being creative.

  1. Family and Belonging

There is also the element of family which the film portrays beautifully. It is neither the family that the characters are born into, like Alex finding his parents, nor the one that the characters choose.

  1. Friendship and Loyalty

The bonds of the four friends are also quite strong, since, no matter the amount of distance, they always support each other through confusion, change, and challenge.

  1. Confidence and Growth

Both Melman and Marty have internal struggles concerning self-identity. For Melman, the challenge is learning to accept the responsibilities and the associated speaking up that comes with them. For Marty, the struggle is realizing that his uniqueness is inner and not outer concealing.

Animation and Music

Colorful and alive is an apt description of the animation in Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa. Populated with colorful animals, African landscapes gracefully swaying grasslands, and beautiful flowing cartoon paintings, it is lovingly animated. Each character displays and retains their extreme emotions and their fluid motion and animation enhances them further.

The combination of zeal and feeling in the film’s score by Hans Zimmer is remarkable. A fun score like the returning of the I like to move it song adds to the fun and dancing of the film, while the rest of the music helps add to the feeling of the film particularly in the emotional moments with Alex and his parents or Melman and the audience where he publicly states his feelings for the first time.

Voice Cast

Equally impressive is the returning voice cast:

Ben Stiller as Alex the Lion

Chris Rock as Marty the Zebra

David Schwimmer as Melman the Giraffe

Jada Pinkett Smith as Gloria the Hippo

Sacha Baron Cohen as King Julien

Cedric the Entertainer as Maurice

Andy Richter as Mort

Alec Baldwin as Makunga

Bernie Mac as Zuba (Alex’s father) – A warm and powerful performance that stands out in the film.
