Plot Summary
The story begins in a frozen world, where a plethora of animals are attempting to move toward the South in a bid to escape the harsh climate. Among them, a woolly mammoth known as Manny, decides to break the norm and head north for reasons only known to him. Unlike the other animals, Manny takes pleasure in solitude, and thus, at the first acquaintance, appears to be quite rude and unwelcoming.Manny, as he travels, meets up with Sid, a sloth, who, unlike the others in his family, is a bit of a chatterbox and rather tactless. As is his usual custom, Sid gets into trouble and gets into a predicament from which he is saved, rather reluctantly, by Manny. They do not get along well but Sid decides to stick with Manny anyway, which the mammoth is not pleased about.
Soon enough, the two come across a mother who, during the chaos, is separated from the rest of the campers and, while losing balance on a river, puts her child, Roshan, in the hands of Manny. Manny and Sid volunteer to take the baby back to his tribe, although neither of them knows what to do with a baby, let alone the fact it is a human child.
The two are then accompanied by Diego, a smart saber-toothed tiger who provides them the assistance of leading them to the other tribe. Sid and Manny are not aware of the fact that Diego, along with his pack, has a mission to bring the child to a different tribe. As the three of them work together, the animals face many different challenges, from natural to personal, and get closer as a team.
By the end of the story, every character experiences a character-development arc, overcoming internal conflicts along the way. Manny begins to care again, and is more open with his heart. Sid learns loyalty and responsibility, and Diego reevaluates his allegiance, and learns the fundamentals of friendship.
They no longer remain mere co-travelers; by the story’s conclusion, they have created a family.
