Gantz: O is a 3D animated film released in 2016 that focuses on the adaptation of Hiroya Oku’s manga ‘Gantz’. Keiichi Sato and Yasushi Kawamura were in charge of direction. The film however is more focused on the ‘Osaka Arc’ of Hiroya Oku’s from the profoundly animated source material. Unlike the manga though, which contains adult material and is graphic, the film opts on action, teamwork and focuses on the emotional hardships that are encountered by ‘normal’ people’ due to ‘abnormal’ situations.
Unlike a lot of other animated films, life, human clashes with death and the essence of human life itself is exposed through the artistic lens with a futuristic setting. The film also brings to light the concept of having the second chance in life, which is portrayed almost effortlessly.
Plot Summary
The plot of the film follows a brave young man by the name of Masaru Kato. Kato in vain attempts to protect someone and ends up dead. Rather than passing on into the ‘next life’ Kato finds himself in a ‘mysterious’ room in ‘Tokyo’ which contains a large black ball called ‘Gantz’ and a dome filled with other humans who have also recently expired.
Participants have been chosen without any context as to why them, to fight with bizarre, yet powerful, beings with the intentions to eradicate humanity. Each opponent Kato is up against is equipped with a battle suit, which enhances Kato’s strength, speed, and endurance significantly. Points are awarded for achieving specific goals, and a user with enough points gets the privilege to, for instance, use the points to equip themselves with a stronger weapon, revive a fellow user, or even return to the user’s previous life.
Kato’s determination leads him to one of the missions set in Osaka. There, he comes across the Tokyo and Osaka team members, both of which he is familiar with, as well as some new players. This team has a lot more experience in battles, which makes their fight a lot more reckless. Among the Tokyo members, Kato forms a bond with a powerful, yet kind, fighter named Reika.
Kato is brave in a manner that sets him apart. During the mission, he manages to inspire a few people, which proves that he is a natural born leader. It is his compassion, determination, and courage that makes him great, as opposed to his inexperience making him lose. Like Kato, born leaders are just as easily made from the heart, versus experience.
The film’s penultimate standoff centers on the strongest antagonist of the Osaka mission. Though the fight is difficult and comes at a cost, Kato’s valiant and self-sacrificing traits are most notable. He not only affects the mission’s conclusion, but also alters the perspectives of those around him.

The characters are created from CGI technology done in a breathtakingly lifelike manner and are perfectly fluid in movement and enthralling motion. The advanced technology in the futuristic suits and weaponry is hugely impressive and the city of Osaka is rendered equally with breathtaking beauty intertwined with destructive chaos.
The variety with which the imaginative creatures are designed is staggering, consisting of smaller, lesser opponents to gargantuan extraterrestrial monstrosities. The powerful visual effects exquisitely portray the sharp contrast between the players and the numerous bizarre and frightening enemies and the player’s advanced weaponry and technology.
The action sequences are superlative and incorporate a dynamic level of rapid, cut and thrust movement that is, bafflingly, skillfully choreographed. The intensity of the missions are staved off so that the character’s expressions and emotions are not lost, adding charm to what would be called a more spectacle driven narrative.
Tone and Storytelling Style
Aside from the numerous battles Gantz: O has, it focuses a lot on the character. In the case of Kato, we follow his development through his interactions and his relationship with Reika and other members of the team, which shows that the story revolves around people.
The Gantz: O’s pacing is such that there is a good balance between emotions, and slow dialogues, and battles, which makes the story a lot more interesting and keeps the audience’s attention. In the end, it is not just the great Kato visuals that they remember, but his heroics too.

‘Gantz: O’ became on the first day of its release, the most viewed among the cgi animated films, and it was the most mentioned animated films on social media. The audiences received it with a lot of praise, especially for the action and development of the character Kato, a hero with a soft heart. Even though some people said that if you knew about the Gantz universe it would make the story better, it was easy enough for people just stepping in to enjoy too.
Conclusion
Gantz: O’ is beyond a Sci-Fi action movie. It is a representation of courage, human spirit, and teamwork. In the case of Kato Masaru, the movie portrays a real story which emphasizes the value of caring and the willingness to help others in the most desperate times.
The animation artistry and world-building fantasy and emotional depth of Gantz: O gives the audience enjoyment and reflection at the same time. It analyzes people’s value system and the extremes they are willing to go to in order to survive and if they are willing to embrace them again when given a chance.
