Introduction

Produced by Light Chaser Animation Studio, White Snake is a Chinese animated fantasy film directed by Amp Wong and Zhao Ji, released in 2019. Based on the Chinese folktale, The Legend of the White Snake, the movie displays focus on romance, destiny, and identity while employing modern artistry and advanced animation technologies. Although it is based on a myth, the film still tackles love, sacrifice, and metamorphosis- elements that the audience can relate to in their daily lives.

With a runtime of approximately 95 minutes, the film has gained international recognition for the emotional depth of its storytelling, its visual designs, the fusion of contemporary film techniques with Chinese traditional storytelling, and above all, for its fantasy romance. It performs the dual function of a reimagined legend and a standalone fantasy romance accessible to a worldwide audience.

Plot Summary

The film opens with a snake spirit named Blanca attempting to murder a powerful ruler. The attempt gets thwarted, and during the ensuing confrontation, she loses her memories. Almost drowned and in a weakened state, she is rescued by Ah Xuan, a young hunter from a nearby village.

Having no knowledge of her true identity, Ah Xuan brings Blanca back to his village, where he and his dog take care of her. As Blanca heals, she struggles with amnesia, although she eventually adjusts to life in the village. The bond between her and Ah Xuan deepens into something more, but Blanca’s intuition warns her that her true origins and hidden potential are far greater.

As the narrative progresses, Blanca starts to remember parts of her past. She comes to terms with the fact that she is not a mortal human being, but a spirit who has lived for centuries. With her divided between the two worlds, it is a matter of time until she decides to fully unveil her true self, or remain with the pure and unwavering Ah Xuan, whose love for her is absolute.

A ruler, whose obsession centers around the acquisition of the supernatural, seeks to pose a threat to her and Ah Xuan. On the other hand, there are those who see spirits as a threat. Nevertheless, Ah Xuan remains devoted to Blanca, even after learning her true identity.

Loyalty, courage, and destiny come to a head at the climax of the film and, around these interwoven concepts, she culminates a division of herself as much as she meets with opposition in the world around her. The ending is bittersweet. The eternal stand-off of the world of love, true love, and the sacrifice it demands to the world of the spirit is ever reminding.

Characters.

Blanca (the White Snake).

Blanca is the primary character, a spirit with hundreds of years under her belt. She loses her memory, she comes to experience life as a human, and loves in a way and to a degree that she never felt in whole. She exhibits duality in essence; she is the spirit, the power, and the mystics, and she is love, tenderness, and pure vulnerability.

Ah Xuan.

Ah Xuan is a simple, unpretentious, yet kind soul and a young man of the small village. The love that no one else was willing to provide for her is that of a deep acceptance. From the outside, he is ordinary, yet he showed courage under the small village for standing beside and defending the spirit of a woman.

Verta (the Green snake).

Blanca’s younger sister, Verta, is a protective and pragmatic character. She serves as counterbalance to the passion and impulsive character of her sister and provides the rational precaution. There is a risk in her sister’s love of humans that Verta warns against. Knowing this, and against the instincts of her sister, Verta gives the rational precaution.

The Ruler

As the story’s antagonist, he epitomizes uncontrolled ambition and greed. The desire for supernatural power fuels the main conflict. His character epitomizes the theme of humanity and its perpetual encounter with forces it does not understand.

Themes

  1. Love Across Boundaries

At the center of the story is the love of Blanca and Ah Xuan. Their love is of spirit and human, thus, it transcends the division of the two and embodies the archetype of love overcoming all.

  1. Identity and Transformation

Blanca’s amnesia serves the narrative by allowing her to experience and explore humanity and the tension therein. It is still the central narrative of the film, with all its permutations and variations, for one to explore and discover oneself.

  1. Sacrifice and Loyalty

The depth of the bond between the two is amplified by the sacrifices of Ah Xuan and Blanca. The relationship takes a risk when Ah Xuan puts himself in danger for her and Blanca for the first time discloses her true identity.

  1. Nature and Humanity

The relationship of character and spirit in the film serves as a microcosm of the relationship of humanity to nature. Exploitation of spirit is not the only option; there is also respect and harmony, as Ah Xuan shows.

  1. Sisterhood

The relationship between Blanca and Verta constitutes another centerpiece. Verta’s cautious and protective instincts diverge from Blanca’s fiery and risk-taking disposition, epitomizing the intricate and multi-faceted nature of love between siblings.

Visual Style and Animation

The film’s visual stylization is among the most notable integrations of the film’s animated rendering and aesthetic approach. The richly rendered prints of the film harmonizing the traditional Chinese visual culture and contemporary forms of animation. The backdrop of the film are presented and rendered in the Chinese aesthetic stylization with landscape being brushstorked, while the character prints are rendered in modern sleek and expressive forms of animation.

Again, Verta and Blanca’s contrast of colors and personifications through their shades of character helped reinforce the character’s roles and helped amplify the major thematic expressions of sibling love and bond. Verta, the Green Snake, represented the groundedness of Verta and the natural love of the Green Snake, while Blanca, in white, was the calm, the purity, and the elegance.

The dramatic action sequences are complemented and offset by the calm and quiet sequence of the film, where the audience is invited to partake in the emotional inner story of the film instead of the overt actions. The repetition of water, clouds, and mountains serve to offset and harmonize with the dramatic actions that overtly run in the face of the audience.

The score achieves harmony with the animated rendering of the film and is effective in reinforcing the emotional tone of the film. The incorporation of Chinese orchestral instruments and contemporary orchestral arrangement achieves the transcendental harmony of the score with the emotional tone. The score enhances the poignant and emotionally charged moments of the film, reinforcing the inner story of the film in the audience.

Reception

Critics and audience members all complimented White Snake. Many hailed its stunning visuals and described it as one of the most ambitious, recent Chinese animated films. Like Chinese romance, folklore fusion helped attract the attention of foreign consumers.

Furthermore, the film was able to highlight the reinterpretation of a classic tale in a refreshing and modern manner. It centers the story on a human relationship, hence mythologized figures and protagonists anchors a relatable tale. Several critics considered the film’s unresolved ending a positive inclusion and told the narrative that it represented the reality of complicated love, and helped draw a contrast of idealism.

As a return on the film’s success, a sequel entitled Green Snake was released in 2021, which shifts the focus on the character Verta and further develops the universe that White Snake established.

Conclusion

White Snake does not stand as an animated fantasy, it is also a story that gives the audience an experience of love, identity, and sacrifice. It has modern cinematic and narrative qualities. White Snake is able to draw a global resonance with its core representation of love that transcends intertwining and notes self-discovery, and the complicated balance of nature and humanity.
