Synopsis
The pirate and treasure quest genre was added to Tom and Jerry’s franchise with Scott Gerlad’s Tom and Jerry: Shiver Me Whiskers, a direct to video animation that came out in 2006. The film provided a break from the film’s domestic marathon chaos since it offered Louis the opportunity to construct and incorporate slapstick comedy and animation in a pirate treasure adventure. Tom and Jerry provided a change from the endless domestic humor and slapstick in lower deck pirate comedy.
Shiver Me Whiskers opens with the Tom and Jerry rivalry. The rivalry soon comes to a halt when Tom finds a magical bottle. Inside the bottle is a treasure map belonging to the famed pirate Captain Red Eye. Tom and Jerry soon find they are not the only ones interested in the map. A set of wacky pirates, Spike the bulldog, and pirate captain Spike, with a story of his own, also set their sights on the treasure map.
Driven by curiosity and the chance for adventure, Tom becomes a member of the pirate crew, eager to be the first to unearth the treasure. Not too far behind, Jerry finds a clever way to sneak on the ship too. What results is a rather thrilling period of the ship’s deployment toward treasure island. Tom and Jerry’s shipboard antics during the period include innocent shipboard exploits, such as the unintentional discharges of shipboard cannons and the inadvertent shipboard entanglements in the rigging, and juggling, wielding, and passing the shipboard cutlasses for combats, and pirate ship deck imitations of swashbuckling, shipboard sword fights. Though their attempts at the ship hijinks and pirate swordplay rival each other, the rivalry is, of course, a purposeful and intentional scam to generate a comic light for the period antics in the adventure narrative.
While in the vicinity of the treasure island, the ancient pirate ship crew, skeleton ghost, and pirate skeleton crew provides the island with defector or ancient guardian shipboard protection or negative and nonfriendly pirate crew shipboard protection to the treasure. On arrival to the treasure island, the shipboard crew of ancient pirate ship and ghost, nagging, and annoying, pirate skeleton ship crew provides the treasure with guardian protection shipboard in the form of a ship ghost, pirate skeleton crew and nagging ship ghost, pirate skeleton crew provides the treasure island with negative ghost and ship protection to the treasure. The treasure site is vexed with a pirate ghost skeleton crew nagging ship and treasure island vexed with nagging ship ghost deported pirate skeleton to the ship ghost, pirate skeleton crew pirate. Vexed with nagging ship and pirate protection, ancient pirate, skeleton crew nagging ship. Guarding pirate. Vexed nagging ship ghost, skeleton crew.
In the last part of the film, all the characters engage in frantic, desperate scrambles to secure the bounty, each attempting to outsmart the others in the gold rush frenzy. The ending is extremely satisfying as the pirates’ expectations of the gold bounty are exceeded, resulting in an unanticipated comic twist. It is fitting to the light-hearted tone of the film. The relentless, timeless chase between Tom and Jerry resumes as they chase each other in the sunlit pirate ship, proving that their rivalry is always present, no matter how far in the world they are.
Tom (The Cat)
Tom is always silent but expressive. Much of the comedy is achieved through movement, facial expressions, and comical sound effects. Shiver Me Whiskers is a welcome change as Tom is dressed as a pirate, an one of the classic films where he ends up on a reale pirate ship. Tarzan’s characters are comical as clowning and in Shiver Me Whiskers there is clowning as a pirate.
Jerry (The Mouse)
Jerry is small but clever. he constantly outsmarts Tom and in the process. Jerry’s actions are mischievous but they are always driving the gear. Jerry’s waste’s and ingenuity are helpful in solving the riddles of the gold and in navigating the pirate ship.
Spike (The Bulldog)
Here, Spike portrays Captain Spike, a rude, yet highly entertaining pirate captain. He adds tension whilst being comedic as he attempts to reign in his disorderly crew, all the while coping with Tom’s endless incompetency. His deep voice and strong physique, all the while being in comically absurd situations, adds to the silliness.
Supporting Characters
The pirate crew has a multitude of animated and diverse personalities with different humorous attributes and odd designs. Although the crew and characters are not developed in depth, the variety and humor they contribute are enough to enliven and accelerate the story smoothly.
Voice Cast
The character’s voice is provided by Don Brown, who is Spike. He attributes a hearty and commanding tone to Spike.
In additional to Spike, other voice actors are Kathleen Barr, Garry Chalk, and Richard Newman who voice other supporting characters with vibrant energy and fun to every scene.
In keeping with the storico of the franchise, Tom and Jerry are both silent, as has always been the case, thus retaining the classic authenticity.
Animation and Visual Style
Tom and Jerry: Shiver Me Whiskers continues to meet the expectations of fans of the franchise, using vibrant colors and fluid movements to amplify the slapstick comedy. Though the film was created using traditional 2D animation techniques, some digital enhancements were made to lighting and effects—particularly for the ocean, pirate ship, and treasure island scenes.
