Michaël Dudok de Wit’s The String Theories is an entire feature with next to no words, articulating an incredibly touching and metaphorical tale about life, change, and the relationship with nature. The Ishikawa and Wild Bunch co-produced and distributed film and The Ghibli Studio is associated with the production due to it’s unique and atypical approach to animation. The Dhutch director Dudok de Wit is acclaimed for his rich and stylized narrative along with surrealism added through animation. The animation also deals with real life matters which is why the audience finds it very relatable, due to silhouette animation.

The underwater world is incredibly rich in life. Along with the reefs and great corals run the dolphins and the occasional school of fish. There are also the turtle which swim incredibly gracefully, gliding by smoothing the waters around them with ease. The tranquility of the place is utterly attractive. The vivid colors seem to merge together and flow with each other along, and the coral rays seem to shatter just out of the vicinity of the pebbly shores of the island. The dusking rays of the too glimmer upwards, following the turtles around for some unknown reason. The turtles are massive, along with each side scattering the small tropical fish, n its glistening shell glimmer as though it were another world of corals and the sun alike. It is as though the turtles are giant pieces of hidden reefs and corals which have come to life. Everything around the island and half the world is breath taking, and calm. Nothing out of the ordinary seems to be exceptionally pretty around the peaceful waters and the sky.

In a moment of anger and anguish, the man strikes the red turtle. An extraordinary metamorphose immediately follows; the turtle morphs into a woman. This enchanted transformation, out of the blue, signifies the start of the new chapter. The man no longer wishes to escape. He, however, establishes a deep connection with the woman. They, thereafter, construct a family and reside in tranquil ease with the surrounding natural environment.

In the course of time, the film further delves into the subjects of affection, growing old, having children, and the never-ending cycle of life. The boy, having matured, understands the new ways of the island and intricately dances with it’s rhythm. Ultimately, just like a bird that has just been set free, he ventures out to the open to begin his own expedition.

The man, in the culmination of the film, is drawn new into his own ending. Alongside his destined old age and death, his woman from a projected past continues to live. The poetic mystic of the wife is brought into realization. This is the part that instructs the audience of the life cycle; the composing and dissolving relationships.

The Red Turtle is apparently simple in plot and devoid of dialogues, yet it is able to convey truths of profound emotions. The film reflects on solitude, companionships, transition, and even acceptance. The silence in the film expresses the volume of emotions and enables the audience to derive their own meaning out of the narrative.
