Acclaimed adventurist Moana combines Polynesian mythology with stunning animation to carry a profound and uplifting theme of self-realization and self-actualization, a theme that resonates with audiences of all ages. Its release in 2016 was a grand success, motivating its audience with tales of spirited explorers driven by hope and determination. Its direcetors llike don hall and Chris Williams saw it through with such delicacy, which surely paid off. Moana Waialiki sets off on a thrilling expedition to save her people, the culmination of which leaves her and her… on the edge of truth.
The Pacific islands setting introduces us to Moana, the daughter of Moana Chief Tui, the leader of the island of Motunui. The plot landscape is rife with possibility, and it is a landscape Moana is irresistibly drawn toward. It is a fascination of the deep that begins in early childhood. It is a fascination that Chief Tui self selflessly loves her daughter, and out of paternal concern tries to reign in this desire in the hope of her taking on the responsibilities that most daughters hope for.
The island dwellers are content with their lives and use the land and sea to feed and house themselves. But because of the failing crops and the deadly stilling waters, Moana realizes their home is in danger. Her wise grandmother, Gramma Tala, tells Moana to turn to the stories of their ancestors. Tala tells Moana of Te Fiti, the goddess of life in the Pacific Islands, and how the demigod Maui stole her heart — a small glowing green stone — and darkness spread across the ocean. That same darkness is now engulfing Motunui.
Moana is told the ocean has chosen her to restore the heart of Te Fiti. Even though her father is against the idea, Moana sets sail alone, with the voices of her ancestors guiding her. During her journey, she meets the demigod Maui. Maui has an overinflated personality and magical abilities and is described as a larger than life character. Maui doesn’t want to help at first, but Moana is able to convince him to join her by demonstrating her bravery.
They encounter violent storms, the enormous coconutarmored Kakamora, and the volcanic monster Te Ka who blocks the road to Te Fiti. Moana learns how to sail, to trust on herself, and to cooperate with Maui who, in the end, succumbs to his own doubts and reveals an account of his own history, such as having been an abandoned child who desperately seeks admiration.
In the event of Moana’s abandonment, and assumingly during the failure of the mission, she is visited by the spirit of Gramma Tala. Gramma Tala is tasked with assisting Moana in overcoming the defeat and in doing so, she restores Moana’s identity. This is the moment when Moana realizes her true identity. She is no longer the chief’s daughter, but the vessel of her people’s destiny who is bound to sail.
Knowing fully well that Te Ka is Te Fiti disguised by the absence of her heart, Moana with great finesse and compassion restores the heart and in the process, brings Te Fiti back to her former self. With the restoration of Te Fiti’s heart, the islands and ocean regain their balance as life is brought back to them.
Moana returns to her island as a timless hero- an accomplishment that comes hand in hand with the fact that she managed to save her the island people hisotically. For in the final scenes of the movie, Moana, with great pride, leads her people towards renewed exploration. Just like their ancestors, they embark on voyages crossing the oceans.

Moana is an extensive film that is delineated and universal which starts with the culturally the most important and embodied theme of the motion picture which is cultural prominence. The animation itself holds much of the Polynesian cultural narrative. It would also proffer the epitome of the galaxy and folklore. Consequently it aids in reminiscing of the age and time where river and ocean adventurers thrived. Furthermore, it sheds light on the importance of keeping history close, alongside, pursuing the wilderness.
The bond which Moana and Maui share further support the idea of respect, development, and most importantly, collaboration.

Final thoughts:
Like ever other Disney movie, Moana is filled with beautiful visuals and songs, but the emotional essence entangled in the core of the movie is unmatchable. The movie is inspirational not just because Disney produced it, but because it tells the story of a girl filled with humanity, and confidence, empowering the women of today to embrace spirit, and tackle the uncharted.
Moana is not just a story, it is a scenario, a feeling. Whether you have hoisted a sail before in your life or not, the next important venture you embrace in life, Moana will teach you to embrace your ambitions, and have the confidence to trust is to self-spirit.
