Overview
Mars Express is an animated French sci-fi film that came out in 2023, and was directed by Jérémie Périn. The film takes the audience on a virtual journey on the Mars in the 23rd century where humanity along with androids and robots have expanded beyond Earth.
The film combines imaginative science fiction with elements of traditional detective fiction in a way that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. The themes of the film include identity, technology, memory, and freedom, with the centerpiece of each theme being a slowly illuminated city on Mars.
The film is impressive due to the animation, overarching narrative, and the emotional growth of the characters. While contains moments of action and suspense, it certainly is not a movie where the audience is forced to buckle in and anxiously await the next scene.
Plot Summary
The year is 2200, and the sprawling city of Noctis is the Robotic Research and Development Center of Mars. The city on Mars is a paradox where humans and bio-androids do not truly get along, yet coexist.
The protagonist of the story is Aline Ruby, an equally fierce and passionate private detective. She is partnered with Carlos Rivera, Aline’s former human companion who died several years ago and the android Carlos is modeled after. Aline’s former partner is no simple human, as he possesses memories and several aspects of the personality of the original as well which makes Carlos more than just an automatron.
Aline and Carlos take on the case of a young hacker called Roberta Williams who is notorious for android and illegal robotics software modification. Their mission spans Earth and Mars and is still ongoing until Roberta is no longer in custody and just vanishes. This all changes everything.
Days Later, Aline and Carlos have received reports about Jun a robotics student who won the case with her roomate. Jun is passionate about AI and has ethical standards for robotics. All of this now plunged Aline and Carlos in a more complex web of mysteries.
Upon piecing together the details, it becomes clear that they are dealing with more complex, shadowy entities that are actively attempting to control the future of androids. An ethically troubling system of improving android consciousness using data harvested from real human brains comes to light. These systems of android brain data collection are bordering on the unethical, probing the moral limits of science fiction philosophy, identity, and autonomy, and the very essence of life.
The investigation personally affects Carlos, as he is an android. He begins to grapple with unsettling questions on the nature of his existence and autonomy, and if he is indeed free, or simply executing a set of programmed instructions. This is where Aline’s character starts to resonate. Aline struggles with the loss of her original partner, and while it pains her, it helps her to resolve Aline’s emotional relationship with Carlos.
The conclusion emphasizes resolution, understanding, and the desire to cohabit in peace with more advanced machines. The story changes focus and tries to be more reflective. In contrast to the obtaining of the story’s climax, there is no more discord, and therefore no more need to focus on a conflict. Instead, it is the resolution that drives the story. A decision of Carlos is not only transformative, but it also embodies his growth and self realisation. Aline also changes. She emerges with a more profound understanding of her position in the world.

Jun Chow
Jun is a young enthusiastic student who is particularly keen on technology and artificial intelligence. Her disappearance acts as the focal point for the new investigation that takes the film in a new direction and her thoughts on android rights and artificial intelligence are crucial.
Chris Royjacker
Chris is a business executive at android manufacturing companies. His character showcases the dominance and control that the technology industry holds while setting and altering the country’s laws in addition to having a complete sway over the society.
- The relationship between identity and memory.
Carlos’s case handles this question on the crossing of memories and identity. He asks whether having memories and emotions is enough to consider an android a person.
- The impact of technology on humanity.
As technology advances, new ethical questions emerge. What are the boundaries of machine use?

Animation and Style
Animation itself is considered one of the strongest parts of the film. The visuals are beautifully done, merging science fiction and the aesthetics of an old-school detective novel. Noctis city is filled with vertical skyscrapers, illuminated billboards, and advanced teleportation systems, and is all done in a fashion that is neat and artsy. Noctis’s buildings and structures are artistically presented in a sophisticated manner.
Each character is filled with depth and emotion, with the animation’s primary focus falling on the expressive hand-drawn components, complemented by the characteristic visual esthetics of the modern age. This captivating combination of classical animation and exemplary digital artistry is what provides a screen with a unique brand new delight to a viewer’s eyes.
Reception
Critics alongside the audience showered praise at the beauty of the animation, its captivating, character-driven storytelling, and the depth of its character. Although Mars Express gains some influence from timeless works of fiction, it’s one-of-a-kind, distinct from its inspirations.
As fundamental as it may be to viewer reception, it is balanced in its emotion, big ideas, and mystery, all the while devoid of action and visual spectacles. Instead, the film shifts the focus of the audience to the contemplation of technology and its effects on people and their relationships.
Conclusion
With the science fiction and emotional undertone perfectly fused, Mars express sparks the imagination while having a profound impact on the viewer. Important and sensitive inquiries are posed whilst interlaced in an intriguing and character-strong mystery.
Of all the films created in the industry of animation, it is the artistic style, the themes, the meaning, and the emotional element incorporated in the story of the film that makes it a film worth watching. Growth, exploration and understanding oneself and others, human or robot is the manner in which the story is defined.
