Synopsis
Walt Disney Pictures Lilo & Stitch was defined as a wonderful animated picture. It portrays the friendship between a lonely little girl and a mischievous little alien. It takes place in Hawaii and the film is a beautiful combination of science fiction and the emotionally intense issues of family, identification, and acceptance.
The film begins in a galaxy in the Disney universe where a brilliant but weird scientist, Dr. Jumba Jookiba, is doing unlawful genetic experimentation. His newest creation, Experiment 626, is designed to have super intelligence, near indestructibility, and uncontrolled hyper destructiveness. In a failed hyper-destructive, 626 is captured and sentenced to exile in a wretched asteroid. He takes a ship, and crash lands on Earth in Kauai, Hawaii.
On Earth, a young girl struggles as well. Lilo Pelekai is a creative little girl, full of spirit, but, like so many children, is lonely and misunderstood. After losing their parents, Lilo and her older sister, Nani, have been living together. Nani is loving and dedicated, but struggling to juggle the responsibilities of sister, guardian, and provider. This is made more difficult by social worker Cobra Bubbles, who warns Nani that if things do not improve, Lilo will be put into the foster care system.
Lilo is in need of a friend, someone who appreciates her unconventional personality without criticism. To help Lilo improve her spirits, Nani decides to adopt a pet dog from the local animal shelter. They have no way of knowing that 626 has disguised himself as a dog. He ends up being adopted by Lilo, who affectionately dubs him “Stitch.”
Stitch’s initial intention is to hide behind Lilo from the alien captors who are sent to fetch him. The alien, Dr. Jumba, and a grossly overweight Earth “expert” named Pleakley have been assigned the task of fetch Stitch without being detected. But later, as Stitch spends a longer time with Lilo, he begins to feel something he never thought possible—emotion. Lilo teaches him about ‘ohana,’ the Hawaiian word that means family, and the promise that no one is forgotten or left behind. Little by little, Stitch begins to change. Despite being designed for annihilation, he becomes enamored with the warmth and disarray of Lilo’s existence and realizes that he finally belongs somewhere.
At the same time, Nani has to get a job, keep the house together, and deal with Stitch’s crazy antics, which keep endangering their chances of keeping the family together. Lilo, however, has no doubt that Stitch is family. Gradually, even Stitch starts to doubt his purpose, considering whether he has the power to be anything other than what he was meant to be.
The climax of the film comes when Stitch is finally confronted by the alien adversaries and is about to be taken back. Lilo is taken by one of the aliens, and in that moment of chaos, Stitch puts everything on the line for her. Ultimately, Lilo’s compassion and her bond with Stitch is what persuades the alien leaders to permit Stitch to remain on Earth with his new family.
The final sequence offers a sense of optimism, where Lilo, Nani, Stitch, Jumba, and Pleakley, and eventually Stitch, who is now a member of ‘ohana,’ form a makeshift family. They are now close-knit, if unconventional, family.

As mainly Stitch’s voice, Chris Sanders provided a unique understanding of the film’s tone and overall direction. With Dean DeBlois, he purposefully crafted the film’s playful imagination juxtaposed with sincere storytelling.
