Synopsis
The film Fullmetal Alchemist the Movie: Conqueror of Shamballa serves as the conclusion to the series Fullmetal Alchemist, which first aired in 2003, and continues to be one of the most famous animated series in the world. The film continues to tell the story of the Elric brothers as it picks up right after the series ends. Conqueror of Shamballa answers many outstanding questions and takes the brothers on one last bewildering and hopeful voyage with much to be discovered and learned.
Set after the climax of the animated series, the story starts with Edward Elric in 1923 post-World-War 1 Europe. He is in Munich, in a world without alchemy. Edward, however, has to sacrifice his alchemy and power to bring his younger brother back, Alphonse. Instead of Europe in the 1923, Edward lives in a parallel world as a powerful alchemist. Edward has to get used to the idea of working in a world without magic, and it is also the world where political tensions are rising.
Edward works with a German rocket scientist. Edward’s brother, Alphonse’s, different reincarnation was mentioned earlier in the text, as the rocket scientist is the character closest to Alphonse. Though having someone who resembles Alphonse, Edward is still determined to return to his original world. He is determined to be reunited with his brother, Alphonse, who has his body back, but still is on the other side of the gate.In Amestris, Alphonse Elric continues to look for ways to meet with Edward again. His training in alchemy continues, and he prepares for his next encounter with his brother. His training and determination, like Edward’s, shows how connected they truly are, despite existing in different worlds.
In Ed’s world, the central plot of the film revolves around a mysterious group connected to the Thule Society. The real world Thule Society is an occult group that deals with the supernatural. The film portrays the group as trying to open a gate to a mystical encampment called “Shamballa.” The group does not realize that Shamballa is Amestris, and their attempts to open the gate will end in disaster for both worlds.
At the head of the Thule Society is Dietlinde Eckhart, an ambitious woman who is eager to reach Shamballa. She wants to give the Thule Society the power to reshape their world. Dietlinde is blind to the terrible consequences that will come with opening the gate.As Edward gets wrapped up in this plan, he starts to understand what the society really wants. The film examines the inner turmoil he feels as he contemplates the dangers of returning to his world, and the possible consequences that will come from dimension crossing. Alfons Heiderich, in addition to the science, aids Edward psychologically in the challenging areas of identity, loss, and will, and purpose.
Things eventually get out of hand, and the Thule Society opens a dimensional rift. This leads to a dangerous and reckless crossing of the boundaries of two worlds. Alphonse Elric, despite his old skills, gains a lot of new ones and a strong will and crosses the boundary to aid Edward in the final battle.
All character arcs get some closure, while the Elric brothers get the emotional and action-packed climax of the film. The Elric brothers, in a strong act of self-sacrifice, reunite and decide to stay in the real world version of Earth instead of the world of alchemy, which had become too chaotic. In doing so, they lost alchemy, but gained something of far greater value, each other.
