Abstract
One of the best animated films of Pixar, Finding Nemo was released in 2003. It represents the perfect mix of comedy, excitement, and emotion transposed in an amazing underwater world. Most significantly, the movie showcases love, endurance, and the strength needed to let someone go.
The movie starts in the warm waters of Great Barrier Reef where a clownfish, Marlin, and Coral (his wife) are setting up a new home. They have a cozy anemone home and is ready to have and raise many a new family of eggs. Murlin, however, has a cautious personality and is a worry wart. His love is strong but the strong family emotion turns the world into a cage because of constant worrying.
From the very beginning in his protective nature becomes a major theme. it something was to happen, Murlin only had one egg left and promised to keep the fish, Nemo, no matter the cost, safe and sound. It was very clear to see that regardless of Marlin meaning well, his ways of thinking and acting were limited and wrong. Swimming is a form of exercise and one can achieve anything one wants, regardless of the ‘small fin’ a person has.
\In the beginning of the story, Nemo argues with his father and, trying to show bravery, swims to the open water. This reckless behavior ends with Nemo captured by a diver and taken to a dentist office fish tank somewhere in the distant land of Sydney, Australia. This moment is especially devastating for Marlin, as he feared losing his son and has to finally leave the comfort of his reef to rescue him. \
As Marlin continues to journey to the distant Sydney, he encounters various characters, the most significant of whom is a cheerful Dory. Regal blue tang Dory suffers from a seemingly unique case of short term memory loss. Although she has problems with retaining memory, Dory has a very bright and sunny approach to life and keeps Marlin motivated. To her, the most important life phrase, “Just keep swimming” is what she uses, and in a way, it serves as a central message to the story.
While traveling, Marlin and Dory face comic and dramatic challenges after mysterious sharks, jellyfish, and a vigorous East Australian Current with friendly turtles, and even a whale. They teach Marlin a lesson about trust and courage, and that life is unpredictable.
At the same time, in the dentist’s aquarium, Nemo meets a school of fish led by a wise, although a little tough, moorish idol named Gill. Neon tells Gill that real courage is the ability to believe in oneself, and not to demonstrate oneself.
The film’s climax occurs when Marlin, with the help of Dory, manages to find Nemo. They reunite after which both of them have transformed. Marlin learns to let go of the need to control every situation, and Nemo learns that his physical appearance does not limit his real self, which is someone stronger than he knows.
Voice Cast & Characters
Brooks Albert as Marlin: An anxious, loving clownfish father, who sets a never-ending ocean travel in search for his son. Marlin’s mix of worry and devotion is portrayed by Albert Brooks really awesomely.
DeGeneres Ellen as Dory: A comic which adds to the plot and also offers Marlin some life guidance during his extracurricular activities. So much was the love for DeGeneres’s performance that a spin-off, Finding Dory, was generated.
Gould Alexander as Nemo: A young and brave clownfish filled to the max with curiosity. Nemo is relatable as well as inspirational and is performed by Gould with great charm and sincerity.
Gill as Willem Dafoe: Advanced elder of the aquarium fish. While helping Nemo with a few practical lessons, he’s also busy with secret plans for the entire squad’s freedom to the ocean.
Rush Geoffrey as Nigel: An approachably pelican who assists Marlin and Dory in the course of their journey.
Along with the supporting cast, other characters add comic relief and understanding to the trip such as Bruce the shark, voiced by Barry Humphries, and sea turtle, Crush, voiced by director Andrew Stanton.
Animation & Visual Style
At the time Pixar released Finding Nemo, the animation is described as revolutionary. The filmmakers realistically recreated the world underwater, which took years of research studying the movements of the ocean and marine life. The outcome is astonishing, dominated with vibrant colors, tarnished with sunlit shimmering, and displays glassy water textures.
The contrast between realism and stylization is hit perfectly in the film. The fish and other sea members become very relatable with their expressions and movements; however, the oceanic landscapes capture the pure beauty and strangeness of the underwater world. The stretch of the East Australian Current and the coral reef is alive with beauty, and makes the audience feel immersed in the film as it presents the underwater world as fantasy.
Themes and Messages
Finding Nemo is a film to which every audience seems to connect to due to its universal themes.
A Parent’s Love and Letting Go: Marlin’s triumph in his journey represents the parenthood. The dependency combined with the Trust is mirrored in the realities of so many parents when they need to learn to let their children grow.
Bravery and Self-Discover: True strength, Nemo’s story shows, is derived from having faith in one’s self, no matter how many limitations one is burdened with. He stands as a testament to empowerment and resilience.
Friendship and Optimism: The hope and kindness depicted by Dory is a prime example. Her words, “just keep swimming” while comic, is a way to remind us of the need to keep going no matter how tough times are.
