Synopsis
Ferdinand is a touching animated feature that came out in 2017, and which is based on the popular children’s book by Munro Leaf and Robert Lawson, The Story of Ferdinand. The book was brought to the screen by Carlos Saldanha, who has previously directed such animated features as Rio and Ice Age. Saldanha chronicles the uplifting journey of a bull who is considered a gentle giant and how he defies the shackles of societal norms.
Ferdinand is the story’s protagonist and he is a bull. Ferdinand is a massive and powerful beast with one serious difference that sets him apart. He has an enormous heart. In stark contrast to the other adolescent bulls who fantasize about being bullfighters, Ferdinand chooses the alternative: he picks staring and playing with flowers and roaming in the tranquil countryside. He is a resident of a bull-fighting school, or Casa del Toro, which, as the name suggests, is a bull raising and fighting academy. The difference is that, among fighters he is peaceful, gentle and uninterested in fighting, totally the opposite of what is found in bullfighters.
Because of a youthful misconception, Ferdinand’s life is irreversibly changed as he is now viewed as a threat. Like the rest of the bulls at the Casa del Toro, he has been taken away from his family. While he attempts to fit in with the other cows, he struggles to bury his more sensitive, inner self. Tough as he may be, Ferdinand is a staunch pacifist and believes that life is more meaningful than the unnecessary show of strength.
Nina, a sweet flower farmer’s daughter, is Ferdinand’s new master after he breaks away from the Casa del Toro. With Ferdinand, Nina experiences an oasis of joy, and the two souls are intertwined for a long duration. From the time he spends with Nina, Ferdinand experiences the embrace of a world radiant with joy and magic for the first time in his life. With Ferdinand, Nina experiences a deep bond that is reminisicent of the calm and colorful world.
Ferdinand’s Pacific illusion is shattered when he creates minor havoc in the village, and he is under the misapprehension that he is unrestrained. Once more, he is returned to the Casa del Toro, where he meets with an amazing cast of characters who will assist in the rest of his journey. Among them is Lupe, a strange and emotional goat turned friend and coach who becomes the hidden helper of Fernando.
During his stay at the center of training, Ferdinand also meets some other bulls, Bones, Guapo, and Valiente. Each has their distinct personalities and aims. While the others still hold the misconception of the existence of the bullring and the resulting glory, Ferdinand starts to show them the other way of resided life. A life transcends mere existence. A life based on kindness, understanding, and heart.
The time for picking the bulls for the arena with the accompanying spectacle approaches. Now, Ferdinand has a considerable choice to make, go with the status quo or be who he really is. In his first major act of defiance, Ferdinand walks a path of his choosing. Through hard work, he will show that being peaceful is not a sign of weakness. It is also okay to not be the same as everyone else.
