Synopsis
Set during the early Meiji Restoration period, the 2021 anime film, Bright: Samurai Soul, directed by Kyohei Ishiguro and distributed through Netflix, is part of the same universe as the 2017 live-action film, Bright. However, it includes an all-new tale, characters, and setting.
In this dimension, alongside mankind, an array of magical beings such as elves, orcs, and other fantastical creatures share the same world. During this period of the Meiji Restoration, these beings and humans coexist, albeit without the same discrimination and divide given the ‘othering’ of their powers. Bright: Samurai Soul incorporates elements of Japanese history with the fantasy genre and adds a layer of world-building enriched with culture and significance.
Izo is the story’s protagonist. He is an unfocused and wandering ronin who is now lost and without purpose following the demise of the samurai era. Once a proud and noble soldier, Izo is now a worn-out and quiet man. He takes a bodyguard job at an inn as a means of living, and he is haunted by the bloodshed of the bygone days.
One evening, Izo encounters Raiden, a gentle orc attempting to turn away from his past as a soldier. Not all orcs are cruel, and Raiden’s empathy verges on compassion. Izo and Raiden are different. However, as weary travelers, each seeks the same goal: redemption and peace.
Protection duty begins with an elf child, Sonya. As a Bright, she wields a deadly powerful wand and is marked with exceptional affinity magic. Her exceptional power attracts the attention of numerous dangerous parties as potential targets for manipulation or annihilation.
Realizing the threat against Sonya’s life, Izo and Raiden agree to take her to a sanctuary of her choosing. As they journey through awe-inspiring terrain, flourishing metropolises and their intricately connected, problem-ridden, and underestimated, small distributions, the pair gain invaluable lessons on life and self.
In the beginning, Izo travelling with the trio, begins to find meaning in guarding Sonya, slowly regaining a sense of honor and identity. So, too, must Raiden face bias as an orc, and he begins to learn the importance of fighting for what is right, even when it is hard. Even Sonya, for all her young years, is able to understand more of the journey, learning to place her trust in her protectors and appreciating the full weight of her gift.
Ultimately, the narrative centers on how one finds light in the darkness. It is about the bonds of compassion and loyalty, and the power of courage to navigate one’s difficult path. Izo, Raiden, and Sonya, in this regard, are an unlikely but beautifully cohesive trio. It is a testament to the idea that, at the very least, the most disparate of individuals be transformed into a familial unit.

The 2.5D animation style is one of the defining characteristics of Bright: Samurai Soul. The film incorporates 3D models with 2D hand-drawn textures and the result is a soft painterly painted style. The film is a modern tribute to Japanese artwork, especially ink paintings and woodblock prints.
The film’s style gives the film uniqueness. Images of Japanese landscapes, traditional clothing and architecture of the period is lovingly and accurately created. The film is a fantasy, but incorporates tribute to Japanese cultural history seamlessly.

Themes and Messages
Bright: Samurai Soul is an action-fantasy film but is much more than that. The film presents profound and complex themes in a subtle way.
