Synopsis

In 2019, the Japanese animated film NiNoKuni was released. This film was based on the Ni no Kuni video game series developed by Level-5. Yoshiyuki Momose, who had previously been an animator with Studio Ghibli, directed the film. His work incorporates the elements of fantasy, magic, and mystery while telling a heartwarming story centered around love, adventure, and friendship. The film features music by Joe Hisaishi, who is known for his emotional and rich narratives, and communicates to children and adults. His work enhances the film’s wonderful ambiance.

This story is about Yuu, a quiet intelligent, and reserved boy who uses a wheelchair, his energetic and sporty best friend, Haru, and Kotona, their cheerful childhood friend, and the focus of their admiration.

These three share a close bond, but as Kotona’s, one of the three, health begins to deteriorate. They begin to change as the three see the change in her. One day while the three are walking home, she is attacked by a strange figure. Haru and Yuu run to her defense, and while the three are caught in the moment, the two boys are teleported to NiNoKuni, a magical world. This world is a parallel universe with castles, knights, wizards, and magical beings.

In this universe, they learn that Kotona has a counterpart, Princess Astrid, who is an exact double of her and is threatened by political upheaval and conspiracy within her royal circle. While Yuu and Haru try to make sense of this unusual territory, they become embroiled in a mission to rescue Astrid, and reveal the link that joins the two worlds. They begin to fathom that the incidents transpiring in NiNoKuni have an impact on their real lives, and the other way around.

There comes a moment when the boys are faced with a decision of crucial importance: is it possible to rescue Astrid in the fantasy setting, or will they have to travel back to rescue Kotona in the actual world? With the potential of each step having dire ramifications, Yuu and Haru find themselves on opposite sides of an agonizing decision.

The film elegantly intertwines two plots, the other an enchanting adventure in NiNoKuni and the former the real-world tale of friendship around Kotona’s sickness. Yuu’s involvement in the magical world deepens as conflicts there require him to not just strengthen his magical powers, but grow in wisdom and emotional fortitude as well.

Meanwhile, Haru’s growing irritation and fear begin to cloud his judgment. His protective instinct toward Kotona leads him to reckless choices. In doing what they each perceive as appropriate, Silvio and Haru begin to clash. Their relationship becomes strained and is particularly marked by the very different paths they now pursue.

Building up to the climax of the story, a set of revelations takes center stage. Most importantly, the roots of NiNoKuni and its intricate connections to the lives of the individuals on the other side of the earthly divide come to light. Yuu finds that he has his very own magical realm connection, and his quest now is to embody the real test of love and valor by making a life-altering choice that will ripple effects on his friend’s lives.

Ultimately, NiNoKuni is much more than an adventure about the necessity of magic. It tells a beautiful account of the friction that one identifies with the growing up process, the reality of disentangling and most importantly, the cherished bond of companionship. It courageously invites its audience to reflect on the reality of love. What does it mean to love someone, and as a result, what are the extreme lengths one will go to for the loved one?

This film captures the soft, detailed style of classical Japanese animation: its animated landscapes are lovely, characters are expressive, and the pacing is thoughtful. NiNoKuni is a magical world, brimming with the strange and the wonderful: moonlit forests, splendid castles, a delightful menagerie of talking creatures and animated spells. The animation achieves the remarkable feat of delivering the fantasy emotionally, while simultaneously portraying the emotional intricacies of its characters.

Whatever emotions the film evokes also has to do with Joe Hisaishi’s (famed for his compositions for Studio Ghibli) score. The film fabric is made richly immersive with his music, which ranges from soft thematic piano and whispering orchestras to animated orchestras for climaxes of the story.
