Synopsis

The Boss Baby is an animated comedy produced by DreamWorks Animation and directed by Tom McGrath. McGrath is a director of the Madagascar franchise. The Boss Baby is based on the picture book by Marla Frazee of the same name. The film is a combination of comedy, family, and wonder, showcasing themes of growing up, rivalry between siblings, and familial relationships.

The film is about a seven-year-old boy, Tim Templeton, who is imaginative, growing up, and enjoying a trouble-free life. Life changes for Tim when a mysterious briefcase-carrying, suit-wearing, adult-voiced baby arrives. The baby is introduced as Tim’s new little brother, and he is the new center of attention.

Tim is suspicious and wary of the new baby. To Tim, this baby is no ordinary baby. He is a miniature executive, and much like a baby business executive, he is on the phone barking out orders, reading contracts, and disrupting the peaceful life that Tim has come to know. Tim’s imagination, in attempts to solve the riddle of the new member of the family, goes into overdrive.

Ultimately, Tim learns that the baby is an agent from Baby Corp, an organization high in the sky that manages the balance of love in the world. Baby Corp fears that love in the world is shifting from babies to puppies. The Boss Baby is on a secret mission to stop the popularity of a new puppy created by the CEO of Puppy Co, where Tim’s parents work.

The two brothers, although reluctant, must work together to complete the mission. The Boss Baby is hoping to return to Baby Corp to become the youngest executive, but if he fails, he will have to live in the Templeton home as an ordinary baby, suit and briefcase gone, and with no memories of Baby Corp.

This is a wild and heartwarming ride, the adventure has chases, make-believe sequences, and real emotional moments. Tim and the Boss Baby go on a journey that brings them together, helping them understand that family is not a competition, but a bond to be treasured.

Tim ends up missing the little brother he once resented. In a touching twist, the Boss Baby returns—this time as a real baby, his corporate persona shed, ready to be part of the Templeton family for good. The story closes with adult Tim, now a father himself, telling this fantastical tale to his daughter, who has just received a baby sister. The film leaves viewers with the message that while sibling relationships may start with rivalry, they often mature into lifelong bonds of love and profound friendship.

The film features an impressive voice cast led by: Alec Baldwin as The Boss Baby. Baldwin’s signature sharp, confident voice gives the character an amusingly serious personality that converts to a baby. This performance adds depth and a certain charm to the character and makes him funny and relatable. Miles Bakshi as Tim Templeton. Steve Buscemi as Francis E. Francis: The head of Puppy Co. who connects to Baby Corp in a backstory that humorously intertwines with the film’s plot.

As the older Tim, Tobey Maguire as Adult Tim/Narrator, recounts the story with a thoughtful distance as he old Tim’s character focuses on the more sentimental themes of growing up and the essence of family.

Director and Writers:

Director: Tom McGrath

Screenplay: Michael McCullers

Based on the book by: Marla Frazee

Michael McCullers’ script seamlessly intertw emotional storytelling with elements of slapstick humor. This is a result of McGrath’s juvenile fantasy manipulation combined with the worldly humor of an adult.

Audience and critics’ appraisal of The Boss Baby has been lukewarm, as seen in the cool rating of 6.3/10 on IMDb. This rating suggests a mixed and def lukewarm appreciation of the film, which a minority recognized for its bizarre premise, while the majority appreciated the film’s visual and stylistic creativity and its strong emotional sentiments surrounding sibling relationship and family connection on the core level.

The film’s rapid-fire wit, imaginative visuals, and unique combination of the surreal with emotional truth garnered praise from the critics. The bright and energetic animation is laden with fascinating touches. The fantasy portions of the film, especially the imagined battles and epic escapes, are especially imaginative and brilliantly capture a child’s view of the world vividly and joyfully.

Even though the film is primarily a comedy, the emotional contours of the story resonated with many viewers. The emotional and believable evolution of the relationship between Tim and the Boss Baby is pivotal. Their rivalry is transformed into a bond of true brotherhood, and this unique emotional relationship makes the film resonate with both adults and children.

The film’s success is underscored by the over $500 million it earned worldwide and the nomination for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2018.
