Synopsis
Motherless and only a child, Amanda Shuffleup’s only company was the imaginary friend, Rudger which was created to assuage her grief. With Rudger, Amanda goes on a thrilling fantasy filled journey where they partake in epic adventures. The fact that Rudger exists only in Amanda’s imagination is of no concern. She builds a deep, intimate and personal relationship with Rudger while being invisible to the reality around her.
However, Rudger’s existence doesn’t appear to be that blissful. An imaginary friend like Rudger will only ever be as real as the person who created them. If one of the children moves on, the imaginaries disconnect. This is something that the book The Imaginary handles with great care and sensitivity, blending flights of the imagination with emotional authenticity.
When one of the children, Amanda, has an accident, Rudger is left alone and confused as Amanda’s creator. As the bond with Amanda weakens, Rudger starts fading. In order to find a way to survive, he starts traversing a secret realm filled with other Imaginaries. Other Imaginaries are beings that were once ‘created’ but are now lost or neglected and on the verge of being ‘recalled’ again.
Rudger seeks refuge in a library, a wondrous place of peace and calm for lost Imaginaries. It is there that he meets a cast of characters like Snowflake, Cruncher of Bones, and a wise cat guide, Zinzan. Even though all these characters provide Rudger with a sense of home and family, he is still driven by the fact that he has to find Amanda again.
Rudger’s quest is more deeply aligned with the essence of survival as Mr. Bunting threatens the existence of Imaginaries by phantomatically siphoning their essence. Demonstrating rigor of plausibility, the film uninterruptedly sustains a relaxed and a reverential atmosphere, treating Mr. Bunting more as a metaphorical representation of undisturbed forays, rather than for something malevolent.
Rudger motivates himself not only for self-survival as he returns back to Amanda, but to help her remember the most fundamental things in life such as love, imagination, and relationships. The resolution the film arrives at is emotional, but expressed with careful consideration, portraying optimism and tenderness. Even as he starts to vanish, Rudger, finds satisfaction, not in the fade, but in the knowledge that he helped Amanda mend, and that the connection they share will forever reside within her.
