Synopsis

Wolfwalkers, an animated film produced by an Irish studio called Cartoon Saloon, tells the story of the bond that comes through friendship as well as love and understanding alongside the relationship that one shares with nature. Tom Moore and Ross Stewart are both noted for their eye-popping animation, storylines, as well as the intricate hand-drawn art that appears throughout the film.

The plot of the 17th-century story takes place in Ireland, which during the time was fully cloaked in woodlands and still under the rule of the English. It depicts a resilient and brave young English girl, Robyn Goodfellowe, who alongside her father Bill Goodfellowe and the rest of the community lives in the city of Kilkenny. Bill works as a hunter for a local lord, tasked with the perilous assignment of hunting wolves that occupy the untamed woodlands that border Kilkenny.

Like her father, Robyn aspires to be a skilled hunter, and although she was advised to stay within the city walls, she sneaks out to explore the woods, accompanied by her pet falcon, Merlin, to prove her worth. On one such trips, she meets the enigmatic Mebh, a girl unlike any Robyn has encountered. Mebh is a Wolfwalker, a magical individual who can talk to wolves, and whose spirit transforms into a wolf during slumber. She is wild, energetic, and free.

The more time Mebh and Robyn spend together, the more Robyn understands and appreciates the freedom and world of wolves. Feeling awe and terror at first, her interest was quicky captured by Mebh and her lifestyle, Mebh was now a friend, and her world instantly changed.

The concern remains of the protective wolf pack, which Mebh has been sheltering from meddlesome humans. Mebh has been trying to locate her, however, she is nowhere to be found in wolf form. As Robyn aims to help her new friend, she goes against her father and the Lord Protector, which is her own father.

Once bitten while on an adventurous walk in the woods, Robyn undergoes the transformation into a Wolfwalker and must reconsider everything she understands about the forest, its wolves, and her father’s work. Caught in a paradox—a life of rules and structure within the confines of the city, and the untamed, boundless life of the woods—Robyn is confronted by a question: what is her true essence and what is her real home?

Gradually, the story progresses and in attempts to save her friend and the forest, Robyn’s courageous and daring actions lead to an emotionally uplifting and strong resolution that emphasizes the critical role of compassion as well as the fundamental connection that must exist between humanity and the environment.

Anne and Whitney portray voice characters in the film, with Kneafsey as Robyn and Eva Whittaker as Mebh. Robyn is curious, adventurous and shows great leadership even at her age which is wonderfully depicted by Kneafsey. Whittaker as Mebh is a “very memorable” character and herself very “energetic and brave” who shows deep admiration to her comrades.

Sean Bean as Bill Goodfellowe: Robyn’s father, is a man advanced in years who is trying to protect his daughter, while also maintaining his sense of order. Bean has displayed a sense of passion that demonstrates conflicting sentiments of affection and obligation.

Simon McBurney as The Lord Protector: He is one of the most powerful figures and sees the entire forest as something that needs to be monitored and controlled. Simon deepens his stern and intricate character with a voice that seems to be a percussion to the character.

Animation & Style
One of the most noticeable elements of the film Wolfwalkers is the style of animation. The entire film is hand-drawn and illustrates a blend of two-dimensional animation and contemporary visual art. The artwork complements the film’s ideas: the city scenes are angular and rigid which conveys a sense of control and limitation, while the forest scenes are soft, vibrant, and filled with colors which denote freedom and a bond to nature.

The animation is done in a remarkable manner that is creative by using diverse techniques. The line-work has sections that are soft and sketched which gives the character a storybook. The animation also changes when characters enter the world of the wolf. During the animation, there is a flow movement that gives a sense of freedom that is usually experienced in the forest.

The interpretation of the film’s visuals is expert, which, combined with the use of color, shape, and composition, draws a sharp distinction between the two worlds Robyn faces, psychologically deepening her odyssey.
